This park, located in Daegu's east side along the Kumho River, is dedicated to General
Kwak Jaewoo (pen name Mangudang) who fought against the Japanese army
during Hydeyoshi's Invasion (1592). General Kwak was the first militia leader to successfully
resist the Japanese army. His brilliant tactics and strategies won him many battles. He wore red
costumes and rode a white horse in battle, earning him the name "Red Robed General." The
park contains a statue of him atop his horse. Next to the statue is the Mangudang Memorial Museum
containing many belongings and artifacts from his period. The park contains many varieties of plants
and flowers.
Yeongnam Jaeil-kwan is a grand tower atop a white wall. It was built as the Southern Gate of
Daegu Castle during the Chosun Dynasty period. Although demolished during the Japanese colonial period,
it was restored to its old form in 1980. Choyang-hoikwan Hall, built in 1922,
is a representative historical site of Daegu's independence movement against Japanese colonialism.
Leaders of Korea in 1919 tried to wake the spirit of nationalism in the minds of the youth
through activities from this building.
